When Autumn comes, it can be difficult to avoid falling into that jumper-and-jeans rut. So I've put together a list of easy tricks to make sure you don't look basic over the colder months.
You may not have worn ankle socks since primary school, but a simple sock can add to an outfit, as well as making open-toes a viable option for autumn. Trust me, socks + sandals works.
2. Belt your coat
A favourite trick of Vogue Paris editor, Emmanuelle Alt, belting your coat will accentuate your waist and completely change your silhouette.
3. Try skinny jeans under a dress
This one can be tricky to pull off, but it works best with slim fitting jeggings and a tunic dress. Alternatively, try cigarette pants or leather trousers.
4. Tuck your jumper
For a feminine look, tuck a light knit into a full midi skirt, or just tuck the front of your jumper to create shape and interest.
5. Tie your jacket round your waist
Handy in changeable weather between seasons, tying a light jacket around your waist adds an urban touch to an outfit.
High necklines are always favoured over the autumn and winter months, and they're really easy to style. Wear them with everything from pencil skirts to boyfriend jeans.
7. Go for bold accessories
It's easy to slip into darker colours come autumn, so invest in a few statement pieces to brighten up your outfits.
8. Go green
Khaki, forest, olive - the colour of the season is dark green. Get out your khaki parka jacket, or be brave and wear green tones head to toe.
9. Wear dark florals
Autumn's print of choice is the dark floral - basically, take a floral print and put it on a dark background. These are great for dressing up basic pieces.
10. Layer your jackets
Surely you've amassed a good collection of jackets, what with this being Britain and all, so why stick to just one at a time? Wear heavier jackets over lighter styles for ultra-warmth.
